St George’s Park Hospital Project, Morpeth
Equal Arts ran a series of activities for older mental health service users over two years, beginning with taster sessions in music, dance/movement, writing and visual arts.
Dance and movement worker, Paula Turner, and visual artist Gilly Rogers then worked with elderly and long-stay in-patients at the new St George’s hospital, residents of Riverside House, and children and older people from the local community.
Activities ranged from singing, craft sessions, playing football and Caribbean parties. Twelve resin encapsulations were created based on conversations with participants reflecting on their life experiences and researching the St George’s Historical Archive. The artworks are permanently sited in the hospital building.
